Your Great Wall Journey

Follow the Great Wall from Gubeikou’s original defenses into Jinshanling’s celebrated watchtowers. This private day hike combines battlefield history, quieter countryside, and a striking transition between wild and restored masonry.

Why hiking at Gubeikou and Jinshanling is worthwhile?

The Gubeikou sections are unique and possess many characteristics and beautiful landscapes. You will then make your way into Jinshanling, which was listed as one of the world's cultural heritage sites in 1987. It is one of the most popular sections for tourists who love adventure and learn about the Great Walls history. It is said that the Jinshanling Great Wall is the most beautiful and best-preserved stretch of the Great Wall.

In-depth Itinerary

At about 8:30 a.m., our driver will meet you at the hotel. After 2.5 hours on the road, we will reach the Gubeikou section of the Great Wall and begin our hike. Unlike the Badaling and Juyongguan sections that  have to survive the onslaught of tourists every year, Gubeikou and Jinshanling offer you the enormous freedom to walk and see without crowds.

Gubeikou’s weathered defenses retain traces of their military history, including damaged masonry and bullet marks. Follow about 10 km of winding ridges, where varied towers and the evening light give the original Wall a powerful sense of place.

Jinshanling combines restored stretches with substantial areas of original masonry. Follow the gray-brick ridges through mountain scenery and notice how the weathered and restored sections reveal different aspects of the Great Wall.

Enjoy a locally prepared Chinese dinner at a countryside restaurant, then return to your hotel in Beijing.

Review from John

We've been on a business trip in China and couldn't miss the chance to visit the great wall. With the GWA club, we had an awesome great wall trip (route 1AA) and we had the pleasure to have Barry as our tour guide.

The hiking was great, not only on the wall (both restored and non-restored section) especially the part where our tour guide has guided us through the valley. Amazing view and interesting storys that out tour guide provided us during the hike. Altough a bit cold and windy (trip date, end of November) but still a great experience.

I strongly recommend GWA club tours! See you next time!

Other Same-day Great Wall Hiking Tours to Consider

There are many Great Walls to the north of Beijing, all of which were defensive fortresses that guarded the border at that time. They were built according to the terrain, and each segment has its own characteristics.  Check our full list of day hikes, and sunset, sunrise hikes.

Why Gubeikou-Jinshanling is a thrilling experience

Gubeikou’s unrestored masonry reveals the passage of time through weathered towers and incomplete walls. Look for the General’s Tower and the 24-Eye Tower as you explore the rolling ridges and learn about this historic defensive landscape.
