Just 2 hours from Beijing on a bullet train.
Yungang Grottoes

The Yungang Grottoes lie at the southern foot of Wuzhou Mountain, about 16 km west of Datong. Their Buddhist carvings date back roughly 1,500 years and reflect the meeting of artistic traditions in fifth-century China. The complex includes 45 principal caves, numerous smaller caves, and more than 51,000 stone figures. It is often discussed alongside the Mogao, Longmen, and Maijishan grottoes as one of China’s major cave-art sites.
Hanging Temple

The Hanging Temple occupies a remarkable position against a cliff near Mount Heng. Its compact buildings and dramatic setting have drawn the attention of poets and travelers, including Li Bai and Xu Xiake.
"Facing the Hengshan Mountain, leaning against the Cuiping screen; uploading a dangerous cliff, descending into the deep valley, cutting stones as the base, and starting from the rock; the structure is breathtaking and the shape is strange." During the Qing Dynasty, the architecture reached its peak.
